One evening I was invited to an official refreshment at NID - National Institute of Design during the graduation week. Great food but what surprisedh me was the amount of plastic water bottles offered to the guests and then thrown into the unsorted waste.
The idea of this experimentation comes from the desire of reusing those bottles, and more generally, plastic bottles otherwise destined to become garbage.
I then collected as many bottles as I could.
Following the spirit of "making" and DIY, I designed a "module" made of simple parts. What I realized must be understood as an example.
The "realization system" allows a variable dimension according to the number of bottles at our disposal. What we are going to create can be used as an informal seat, mattress, rug, divider (if hung), lighting system (if equipped with light sources). It can become an artistic installation of environmental complaint or, using the properties of air and plastic, an excellent insulator, even a raft or a water rescue device.
Do not underestimate the sound component and the different “behavior” of the bottles when they are closed and full of air or when they are perforated to allow compression.
In conclusion, the goal of the project is to demonstrate how, usually, “Reusing” is more effective than “Recycling”, and how plastic, a material with extraordinary characteristics, is often relegated to a role that doesn’t suit it.
While crafting “the module” I found in the trash 3 new sealed bottles. Pouring out the remaining water contained inside each bottle I discovered that the amount of wasted water was about 5 litres.
